Partial knee replacement is now one of our most commonly performed procedures. Rather than replacing the whole knee, partial knee replacement just ‘resurfaces’ the part that is suffering from arthritis. This confers the advantage of preserving most of the remainder of the knee including both cruciate ligaments. By leaving the rest of the knee untouched there is less bone loss and more preservation of sensation leaving it feeling more like your knee again.

In a large number of cases of knee arthritis the arthritis is only on the inside (‘medial side’) of the knee so why replace the whole knee?
Partial knee replacement is a slightly quicker operation than total knee with less disruption to the soft tissues and usually much less blood loss. As a result the recovery is quicker and less painful. Most of our partial patients are up and walking the same day as the operation and can even be discharged home the same day as the surgery.
Our surgeons use two types of partial knee replacement. Using the SmartRobotics System made by a US company called Stryker we implant a partial knee replacement call Restoris.
The other partial knee system we use is the Oxford Knee which was designed by a group of orthopaedic surgeons from Oxford, England and has been implanted in the UK since 1982.
